Abdi Phenomenal is an award-winning Somali Poet, Playwright, Creative Director whose work explores the misplaced displaced and replaced stories of the African Diaspora. Abdi's mixture of poetry, prose, and dramatic monologues deal with strength and vulnerability, movement and migration.
He was featured artist at the White House, Somalia: A Nation Of Poets, Bush Foundation, Bushcon, Minneapolis Arts Institute, De Paul University “SJP, Weisman Arts Museum, Global Stories in Copenhagen Denmark where he led the Danish Somali Storytelling Project which developed into I AM ALSO SOMALIA and currently touring Scandinavia. His past production includes an ensemble produced in Minneapolis, dubbed, "Disarmed, but Dangerous" 2010. “Concerning Our Lives” 2012 and revived Art Share Arts Residence for “The Chronicles Of The Diaspora” (2015) “Siyaasada Maanta” The Politics Of Today” which premiered at The Southern Theatre in Minneapolis in 2017. Abdis current project Somalia: A Nation Of Poets airs on TPT Channel regularly. He lives and works in Minneapolis. His work was published by New york Times, Global Stories, The advocates for Human Rights and Minnesota Historical Society, Star Tribune, MN Daily, and much more.
Abdi is also been the founder and artistic Director for Ka Joog Nonprofit for 12 years, nationally recognized, Somali nonprofit organization tailored towards enriching the lives of Somali American youth by utilizing the positive elements of education, mentoring, employment, and the arts. Ka joog community-based, culturally specific programs and services to Somali youth and their families throughout Benton, Hennepin Olmsted Ramsey Sherburne and Stearns county.
Abdi served on the board of Made Here of Hennepin Theatre Trust, which helped reinvent storefront windows of downtown business, by partnering with diverse artists in Minneapolis. In 2015, He was appointed by the Mayor and City Council to serve on the Minneapolis Arts Commission to advocate for arts related issues the city of Minneapolis and engage artists in critical thinking and art making around City and urban issues and to increase artists’ and planners’ ability to facilitate community interaction and work collaboratively with the public to foster positive change in the quality and trajectory of social discourse about the city’s urban future.
In 2019 he will release a novel, short film “For The Love Of Berlin” and his first ever exhibit “International Playground. Abdi is also a consultant at Intersection Consulting company, a Minneapolis based marketing and consulting company meeting complexed identities at the intersection. Abdi lives and works in Minneapolis.
