This exhibition, Frozen Music, looks at musical notations and the breathing functions of the body in an exploration of how human song shapes a space. Layered, sculptural prints examine how sound is …shaped in the human chest with diaphragm, breath, and effort. The larger work consists of two thread installations which are visual interpretations of a choral piece playing in the gallery. One isolates the note to note trajectory (musical code) of each voice part thus emphasizing their relationships throughout the piece. The other draws on the composer’s conceptual ideas and the heard song itself. Both visual translations float from the wall without a tangible substrate, as the music floats in space, but are linear and black on white like the written score. As the mechanics of the composition are experienced in the context of the heard choral piece, the space of translation between the written notations and the sung sound is elucidated. The musical composition in this exhibition is a choral work by Tim Takach. His piece “As the Sunflower Turns on Her God” translates two related mathematical concepts into music — the golden ratio (Phi) and the Fibonacci sequence. These mathematical ideas were found by observing patterns in nature. Pine cones, pineapples, artichokes, palm trees, and sunflowers all contain patterns that reflect the Fibonacci sequence. Takach integrates these principles as musical structure in his piece. MORE
