Some Assembly Required is a weekly focus on sample based music and audio art. Host Jon Nelson explores the world of sound collage via this weekly podcast of his nationally syndicated radio program
Episode 53, Some Assembly Required
Tune in to this week’s episode of Some Assembly
Required (#53) to hear the 2002 Staalplaat release,
Minneapolis Summit, featuring Escape Mechanism, Steev
Hise, The Tape-beatles and Wobbly, along with a few
additional tracks by the artists involved with that
recording.
So, one of the standouts this week is again four
tracks by The Tape-beatles… This week’s episode
includes four tracks which were added to their 1993 CD
The Grand Delusion, when it was re-released, in 2000.
I got to see the Expanded Cinema performance for The
Grand Delusion, in Chicago, nearly a decade ago, and
presented the world premier of Good Times, with Sound
Unseen, at the Oak Street Cinema, in 2001. The
Tape-beatles are renowned for their work with sound
collage, and it’s a shame if more people haven’t seen
their film collage work. They refer to their
multi-projector performances as Polyvision, or
Expanded Cinema, as there are multiple moving images
being projected coincidentally. Their collage films
are the perfect accompaniment to their already
breathtaking audio collage. As you can tell, I’m a big
fan…
The Tape-beatles have long been big favorites of mine,
so it was quite exciting to perform with them on the
other standout track this episode: 2002’s Minneapolis
Summit, which was recorded in Minneapolis, on the
occasion of the 2001 Sound Unseen Underground Film and
Music Festival. Check out the SAR Blog to read all
about our live recording session. Escape Mechanism was
joined by Steev Hise, The Tape-beatles and Wobbly on
the recording. Stay tuned for news about a screening
of the documentary which accompanied the release of
the CD...
