Quake/Temblor: A Forensics of Interior Life and Natural Disaster

Examining the intimate rapport between human and geographic disaster, this exhibition combines engraving on a Formica table, prints, text, sound, and videos of conceptual experiments conducted on a state-of-the-art seismic shake table. Quake/Temblor explores issues including the breakdown of daily life, the relationship of the individual to a larger social system, and the impossibility of prediction. In doing so, it transforms a scientific testing ground into a theatrical stage, employs domestic objects to speak to ruptures in daily life, and uses the process of printmaking to demonstrate collapses in time, memory, material, and space.

Bielak identifies herself as an anthropologist of sorts. "My experience in the social sciences, particularly anthropology and ethnography, influences my immersive and research-based approach to projects. My process generally includes interviews with editing and interpreting stories, sketches, photographs, and sounds."

Bielak, who was born in Mexico City, received her undergraduate degree from Macalester College in St. Paul and currently lives and works in San Diego, Calif. She has received grants from the Jerome Foundation. Her work is included in the collections of the Walker Art Center, Brighton Corporation, and private collections across the nation.
