Some Assembly Required is a weekly focus on sample based music and audio art. Host Jon Nelson explores the world of sound collage via this weekly podcast of his nationally syndicated radio program.

Episode 252, Some Assembly Required

Episode 252 features work by The 180 Gs, A Plus D, The Bran Flakes, E-603, Glee Cast, Bill Holt, The Hop La!, TS/Matix, Mixmaster Mike, Negativland, team9 and Wobbly, Phineas Narco & The Evolution Control Committee. Check it out HERE.

Bill Holt put out his first record in 1974, called Dreamies, with only two (long) tracks, titled “Program Ten” and “Program Eleven”. All Music Guide described the release as a sound collage which “expertly incorporated sampled dialogue, sound effects, psychedelia, political commentary, and wonderful bits of melodic invention”. I played Dreamies in its entirety on the show, several years ago now, and was surprised to recently discover the artist put out a followup, titled “Program Twelve (The End Is Near)”, in 2006. Very much along the same lines, and over thirty years later, the new album is a reflection of events post-9/11. Check out “Are You A Friend” by Bill Holt in Episode 252 HERE.

Be sure to check out the SAR Blog for Q&A’s with over 150 of the artists we play weekly on Some Assembly Required, and download Episode 252 HERE.
