DESCRIPTION
Spring Program
Design workshops that will explore the fundamentals of design based on an existing syllabus. Students will investigate and learn how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are integral pieces to the design process. Students will learn how to analyze, interpret, and ultimately, create/make (a space) by the conclusion of the class each week. The students will partake in a series of design exercises that will introduce basic tools and methods to creating (a space). Furthermore, the students will learn how to translate a 2-dimensional idea into a 3-dimensional design.
Week 1 will focus on tracing and the process of editing.
Week 2 will focus on layer.
Week 3 will focus on craft, material, and representation.
Each exercise will build on the previous exercise to produce a final collection. The students are required to complete all design exercises within the time frame noted on the syllabus. Please note that no extra time will be given to completing assignments. Homework will coincide with exercises and will be expected to be completed the following day and/or class. Students are also required to complete these assignments in a timely manner. This session collaborates with University of Minnesota programs
in the College of Design and the Departments of Fine Art, Public Policy, Youth Leadership, Urban Studies, Geography, Public Health, Urban and Regional Planning, and Cultural Studies. (REMIX 2020)
Summer, Minneapolis Program
Artists will lead youth in the creation, design and fabrication of large sculptural elements using bamboo, lighting, sight maintenance, landscaping, etc to create marketable furniture (lights, benches, chairs) with recycled materials.
Summer, St. Paul Program
Weeks 1-2 (June 18-29, 2012)
June 18 - Orientation and lunch with Program Manager
All youth will participate in intensive foundation training in the elements of illustration, design, drawing and painting. Note: Juxtaposition Arts requires all their paid apprentices to successfully go through 72 hours of Visual Arts Literacy Training prior to being hired. St. Paul youth will experience an abbreviated version of this training.
Week 3-5 (July 2-20, 2012) (no work on July 4)
Mondays of each week will be used for the continuation of foundation training.
Partner with the St. Paul Parks and Recreation Design Department to engage in a parks planting, design, arts or landscaping project. This may include clean-up, planting, design, construction, planning, implementation, moving and setting up materials, a presentation by an expert, etc.
Visit U of MN broadband project on University Avenue for computer work on career exploration, resumes and cover letters (4 hours)
Meet with Parks design staff, possibly have a tour of parks with design projects in progress, learn about the process of design and change in parks (4 hours)
Have a field trip and demonstration at Urban Homeworks in Minneapolis (urbanhomeworks.com)
Work with Public Art St. Paul as assistants as the Western Sculpture Park free arts activities. (8-12 hours)
Continue improvements on the Canvas (Hancock Recreation Center)
Clean-up of space
Installation of more mulch
Plantings and sculptures
Possibly lighting for the large sign
Paint more traction paint on sidewalk
Lighting elements, etc. tbd
Weeks 6-8 (July 23-August 10, 2012)
Engagement in a parks planting, design or landscaping project
Continue improvements on the Canvas (Hancock Recreation Center)
Workshop on interviewing, phone and e-mail etiquette with Ramsey or Minnesota Workforce Center staff (4 hours)
Work with Public Art St. Paul as assistants at the Western Sculpture Park public arts activities. (8- 12 hours)
SUMMARY:
The Environmental Design Studio Lead & Studio Assistant will:
Lead Field Trips
Introduce various aspects of public art. Visit locations that have examples of interactive public artworks throughout the Minneapolis Twin Cities area.
Conduct Hands on Experiments
Experiment with lighting using design models to think about context of artwork at night.
Architectural Design Exercises
Develop design scenarios for the site practicing architectural drawings, and model making techniques.
Skills introduced here are architectural drawing, model making and visual communication skills to articulate their findings, ideas and vision.
