On December 18, 2012, MRAC awarded $287,974 to 61 organizations/projects in the first round of its FY 2013 Community Arts grant program. The organizations and projects chosen demonstrate both strong artistic quality and a connection to a community. This round's funded projects include: early childhood music classes in Anoka County, a literary and performing arts event in Carver County, three coffee concert recitals in Dakota County, a juried art competition in Scott County, a Hip-Hop festival in Washington County and many other theater, art, and music events/projects around the 7-county metro area.
The Community Arts grant program utilizes a block grant system to ensure funds are distributed broadly in the seven counties in MRAC's service area. The following is a list of this round's grant recipients sorted by the county of activity that includes award amounts, project summaries, and links to the grantees' websites when available. Please note that the core cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are separated from the surrounding suburban Hennepin and suburban Ramsey counties.

Funding for the Rosemount Bluegrass and Americana Festival, a three-day event held in Rosemount's Central Park in July 2013.

Funding for two performances of Schubert Meets Copland, a concert featuring Franz Schubert's Mass in G and Aaron Copland's Old American Songs, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Bloomington and All Saints Catholic Church in Lakeville in May 2013.

Funding for nine vocal performances for groups with limited arts access. The performances will take place in the greater metropolitan area between January and June 2013.
20% Theatre Company Twin Cities $5,000
Funding to produce and stage the world premiere of Changes in Time, by E.B. Boatner. Performances will be held at the Minneapolis Theatre Garage in May 2013.
Bells of the Lakes $5,000
Funding to perform five handbell concerts of music ranging from classical to pop. The free public concerts will take place at five metro area venues between February and April 2013.
Cleveland Neighborhood Association $5,000
Funding for Live On the Drive, a free concert series held on Victory Memorial Drive in North Minneapolis celebrating the diverse talents of the community. The series will consist of three concerts held on the second Thursday of June, July, and August 2013.
Eclectic Edge Ensemble $5,000
Funding for their Tenth Anniversary Concert, featuring both new and reworked choreography in collaboration with four local composers. Performances will take place at the Ritz Theater in Minneapolis in July 2013.
Funding for Awareness through Performance, a 16-week program for 15-20 youth participants who will research, design, develop and implement a performance based on social justice issues of their choosing. The program will culminate in a performance in May 2013.
Linden Hills Chamber Orchestra $5,000
Funding for three distinct symphony orchestra programs resulting in six live performances. The free public performances will be held at several metro area locations between February and June 2013.
Magic Lantern Puppet Theater $5,000
Funding to re-envision and perform a Spanish-version, color shadow puppet show titled, Nalah y el Tigre Rosa. Performances will take place at Latino social service sites, the Hennepin County Public Libraries, and In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre in April and May 2013.
Minneapolis Southside Singers $5,000
Funding to present 20 free concerts to under-served audiences across the seven-county metropolitan area during the 2013 calendar year.
Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault $5,000
Funding for a series of three storytelling workshops using theater, movement and literary arts for 36 members of HOPE (Honoring Our Personal Experiences). Workshops will be held at DevJam Studios in South Minneapolis between February and May 2013.
Minnesota Spoken Word Association $5,000
Funding to conduct a three-part series of workshops for urban youth exploring the spoken word poetry technique and history, while opening a gateway for them to write, perform and celebrate their personal narratives. The workshops will culminate in a public performance at the Brian Coyle Community Center in April 2013.
Out Twin Cities Film Festival $5,000
Funding for the 2013 Out Twin Cities Film Festival, a safe and supportive event for artists and audiences to view and discuss GLBTQ inspired films and the ideas presented in them. Screenings will take place at the St. Anthony Main Theatre in Minneapolis in May and June 2013.
Patrick's Cabaret $4,500
Funding for the creation of a new series of evening performances for spoken word artists and singer/songwriters. The three nights of performances will take place between February and June 2013 at the Cabaret.
Photography at the Center $5,000
Funding for a photography program for Native American high school students. Students will partner with mentors to study the history of Native American portraits, and to learn the technical and artistic skills necessary to create their own photographs. The program will take place in the spring of 2013.
South Sixteenth Hijinks $5,000
Funding for the annual Powderhorn Artsled Rally, a free winter celebration with sled-making workshops and sled art to be held at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis in January 2013.
The Singers - Minnesota Choral Artists $5,000
Funding to present Sticks and Stones: Music for Percussion and Choir, two public concerts exploring rarely performed contemporary compositions from around the world. Performances will take place in February 2013.
Twin Cities Carifest $5,000
Funding for Carifest, a family-friendly festival featuring Caribbean music, storytelling, dance, cuisine, and a Carnival-style parade that will take place in Minneapolis in July 2013.
Whittier Alliance $5,000
Funding for Artists in Storefronts, a three-month display of public art works in vacant or underused storefronts along the "Eat Street" commercial corridor in the Whittier Neighborhood. The installations will be on display between June and September 2013.
Workhaus Playwrights Collective $5,000
Funding to produce and stage the premiere of Buried Treasure, by local playwright Alan Berks. Performances will take place at The Playwrights' Center in April 2013
Crow With No Mouth Promotions $5,000
Funding for a 12-concert series presenting composers and performers working in contemporary electro-acoustic improvisation. The concerts will be held at Studio Z in St. Paul between March and December 2013.

Funding for the annual Art in the Hollow, a one-day multidisciplinary outdoor arts festival in June 2013.

Funding for the Hamline Midway Hartwood Festival, a free all-day event featuring local bands, theater performances, visual arts, food vendors, civic engagement opportunities, and resources for residents. The festival will take place at Newell Park in St. Paul in June 2013.

Funding for six free concerts in their 2012-2013 season, featuring baroque music infused with Jazz and Latin flavors. The concerts will take place at various venues in the metro area between February and May 2013.

The Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC) serves nonprofit arts groups in the seven-county (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington counties) metropolitan area of Minnesota with annualized operating expenses less than 400,000. In FY 2012, MRAC received 840 applications and awarded 419 grants totaling 2,738,936 to arts organizations and/or projects including a grant to VSA Minnesota for its regranting program, the ADA Access Improvement Grants for Metro Arts Organizations. These grants were funded by an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State's general fund, and by the voters of Minnesota, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. MRAC also received 366 applications from individual artists in the Next Step Fund program and awarded 32 grants totaling 155,900 with funds from The McKnight Foundation. MRAC also provided 32 arts management training sessions and 26 grant application workshops.
