Mizna is an Arabic word meaning "the cloud of the desert." Mizna is also an Arab-American cultural forum, which publishes a nationally-recognized journal of prose, poetry, and visual art and hosts an annual international film festival. Kathryn Haddad, a Lebanese–American writer, is its co-founder.
Her play, “With Love from Ramallah” was staged at the Mixed Blood Theater in 2004 showcasing the Arab American community and the problems and joys of living in America and
living in the Middle East during this time in history. The play deals with issues of immigration, isolation and occupation and explores the strength of the human spirit to survive. Taking place both on the West Bank of the Mississippi River (in Minneapolis) and the West Bank of the River Jordan (in Ramallah), the play shows the life for Arab immigrants in post 911 America and life for Palestinians in Ramallah during one of the severest political crises in the Middle East to date.
Morstad’s winning proposal was selected for the Innovate mnartists.org $5,000.00 award from dozens of proposals submitted. Radio mnartists will be broadcast on Art Matters, every Friday at 11am on KFAI Fresh Air Community Radio-FM Radio – 90.3 in Minneapolis and 106.7 in St. Paul and posted online every Friday on www.mnartists.org.
Composer Ken Brahmstedt will assist in the production of the series.
“Radio mnartists” features 20 conversations with a varied group of artists from around Minnesota. Says Morstad: “The series is meant to create a larger picture of the diversity of artists working throughout the state and will provide arts enthusiasts with a compelling entry point into the broader Minnesota arts culture.”
The Innovate mnartists.org Award was designed to expand awareness of the mnartists.org website, to broaden the audience, increase participation on the site, use the site’s technology in fresh ways, promote diversity, and connect artists with audience. We thought Morstad's proposed radio interview series met these challenges well: her subjects live all around the state, and include an incredible range of media and styles.
Her complete series will be presented as an audio collection on mnartists.org in January 2006.
