mnLIT is a competitive literary program presented by mnartists.org, in collaboration with Magers and Quinn Booksellers, which consists of the What Light Poetry Project and the miniStories flash fiction series. mnLIT showcases original work by Minnesota poets and writers and is sponsored, in part, by The Onion/The Decider. Interested writers are welcome to submit work for consideration in both the What Light and miniStories competition.
mnLIT OVERVIEW: For 2009 there will be only one call for the whole year's worth of mnLIT submissions. mnartists.org will be taking submissions for the What Light Poetry Project and the miniStories flash fiction competition until Friday, May 15. You must be a resident of Minnesota to submit work for consideration in the mnLIT competition. Submissions to each series will be handled separately: poetry submissions to What Light will be considered by a panel of poets and editors; flash fiction submissions to miniStories will be read and selected by another panel of authors and editors. What Light and miniStories panelists will read and make their selections from an anonymous pool of entries.
PUBLICATION: After the winning What Light poems and short-short fiction of miniStories are selected by their respective panels of jurors, mnartists.org will commence publication of the victorious pieces, from June 2009 through March 2010, on the site's homepage. Magers and Quinn will also publish winning pieces throughout the year on the bookstore's website. Beginning this year, mnartists.org is inviting all mnLIT winners to record an audio version of their piece. The resulting MP3 file will be published alongside the text when each winner's writing is featured on mnartists.org; the audio file will also be made available as an iTunes podcast by mnartists.org and the Walker Art Center. In addition to online publication of winners' pieces, there will be scheduled opportunities for live readings of work by the winning mnLIT writers.
WHAT LIGHT POETRY PROJECT
What Light is a competitive showcase for poetry by Minnesota writers which is now entering its fourth year. This year, 20 winning poems will be selected from submissions received by a panel of regionally and nationally esteemed poets and editors; these winning poems will be published throughout the year on mnartists.org and Magers and Quinn Booksellers' website. From among those 20 winning poets, three grand-prize winners will be selected who will each receive a paid commission by mnartists.org to publish a second original poem on the site.
THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE CALL FOR WHAT LIGHT SUBMISSIONS FOR 2009:
SUBMISSION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2009
Eligibility and Submission Guidelines:
Any Minnesota resident may submit up to three short (maximum 50 lines or 300 words each), previously unpublished poems as attachments to [email protected] (preferably Word documents or, in the case of pieces with complex formatting, jpeg files) or pasted into the body of an email. miniStories FLASH FICTION COMPETITION
miniStories is a flash fiction competition series which spotlights original short-short stories by Minnesota writers. Twenty pieces will be selected for publication by a panel of noted authors, editors, and publishing industry veterans from across the country. We're pleased to announce that novelist Geoff Herbach is returning for a second year as lead juror in the miniStories competition. From the pool of 20 winning authors, 3 grand prize-winners will be selected to receive a paid commission for a second short story (which may or may not be flash fiction) to be published by mnartists.org. Grand prize-winners' commissioned pieces will go through a full editing process and will be illustrated for publication with specially chosen artwork from the vast database of mnartists.org artists.
