Experience

Douglas K. Lemon (Limón) is a descendant of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and is an enrolled member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. His mother taught him how to bead on a loom at the age of five. He eventually taught himself the appliqué style of beading. He has experimented on and off with his beadwork over the last 30 years.

After his older brother John J. Lemon, Jr. passed on, he received a catalog in the mail addressed to his brother John. This was in 2006. The catalog included the Indian Head/Buffalo nickel and inspired the artist to bead Turtles using the coins on the back of the designs. He began to bead consistently on a special material incorporating the Indian Head/Buffalo nickel. Each Turtle with the Indian Head/Buffalo nickel created is dedicated to his brother John.

His daughter Jaime encouraged him to enter his first art show in 2007 and won the Honorable Mention Award. He has since incorporated other materials in his Turtle medallions such as ivory, stone, porcupine quills and has won several awards around the U.S. His work is collected as often by lovers of contemporary art as by those specializing in Authentic Native American Art.

His work is an expression of the spirituality of ancient traditions and a culture that has survived more than a thousand years. His Turtle images combine beadwork with a variety of objects. He beads on a variety of papers using a one-needle technique. His artwork is an expression based on the rich Native American culture, especially of the Ojibwe and the Oneida nations, combined with the influence of contemporary materials and ideals of the modern world. He began to sign his artwork Limón in honor of his grandfather Gavino Limón in the 90’s. He and his wife Rachel officially changed their name to Limón in November of 2008 before the birth of their fourth child Gavino Joseph Limón.

Doug is a board member of the Northside Arts Collective (NAC) in Minneapolis, MN; a board member of the Advisory Board of Ancient Traders Gallery, a member of the Indian Arts and Crafts Association (IACA), Albuquerque, NM; listed in the Source Directory of Indian Arts and Crafts Board, Washington, DC; a member of the Turtle Foundation USA, Bellingham, WA; a member of the Southwest Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), Santa Fe, NM; a member of the Ziibiwing Center, Mt.
