Experience

Poet, Artist, Folk Artist (Norwegian Rosemaler and Swedish Dalamalner), Graphic Artist and Designer, Graphic Arts Instructor, Creative art educator and Writer.

Trained first with the Duluth Art Institute under the former director Poul Nielson during the late 1960's as a painter. I began training in Scandinavian traditional "rosepainting" in 1992, studying under a variety of local rosemaling instructors. I also attended seminar classes at Decorah, IA, and at Stoughton, WI with Addie Pittlekow. I began teaching rosepainting (both Norwegian shaded Telemark Rosemaling and Swedish Dalamalning) in 1995, and continue to do so, by private arrangement..

My graphic art and design training began in 1972 at Rosemount Area AVTI (graphic arts specialization.) Having worked and trained in various computer science, and art and design classes since then at the UofM and Anoka-Ramsey Community college, I became a largely "self-taught" computer analyst who specialized in desktop publishing and design. I began teaching Aldus PageMaker and Adobe PhotoShop in 1990, and have done so regularly since then. During the school year 1999/2000, I founded the Media Graphic Art Academy program at the Edina Art Center's Peggy Kelly Media Arts Studios; a graphic art/design program for children with interest and talent in the visual & graphic arts. During their fourth year, my MGAA students produced and directed a number of short videographic films (including "Survival: in the Minnesota Outback," "Ernie" and "Voyage to Atlantica: A Pokemon Adventure.") The Advanced Teen class also self -published a collaborative exhibition of their work under my direction, entitled "In Our Mind's Eye."

My work as a writer has included poetic works (since 1966-67), technical writing for computer-based education (1989-94), an autobiographical novel (current work in progress), and most recently, my work as Writer/Producer for a documentary on women and girls in the criminal justice system.

Awards

Co-recipient of Jerome Grant for Film Making (2001), Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet "Partners in Justice" grant (2001), Minneapolis City of Lakes Rotary grant (2002), Fremont Foundation grant (2002), Duluth Rotary grant (2003), and co-finalist for Roy W. Dean Foundation L.A. Film grant (2001) for work on "Wayward Girls" video documentary project (completed March 2003.)

Exhibitions/Performance History

Exhibited regularly at the Edina Art Center's gallery, including the Member's Juried Show (2000), and the Faculty exhibits (1998, 1999 and 2000.) I taught at the Edina Art Center from 1995-2004, and in the Peggy Kelly Media Arts Studios since it opened in 1999, teaching graphic art and design. I have specialized in teaching digital Graphic Art and design to children, ranging in age from 3 1/2 to 16.

The 2003 CENTRAL STANDARD FILM FESTIVAL has accepted "Wayward Girls," a behavioral documentary about girls and women in the female justice system, co-produced by myself and Mickie Turk. Wayward Girls was featured at two venues during the festival, on Sept. 18th and 21st. Visit their website at "www.centralstandardfilmfest.com" for details.
