Bio
Joshua Cunningham lives in St. Paul, Minnesota with his wife Shannon and their children Greta and William. He grew up the third of five boys, born in rural Isanti, Minnesota, to Pat and Marcia Cunningham. Joshua’s journey toward oil painting started, as do many such walks, with an inclination to make art as a youngster; that inclination became vocation in the wake of tradegy. The loss of his youngest brother, Ryan, to a car accident shook the whole family. Seeing his brother’s life and dreams cut short, Joshua pursued his own with renewed vigor, shaping both his talent and hismotivation.
At St. John’s University, Joshua started to find solace from his grief in painting. Then he was offered an extraordinary opportunity to apprentice for fresco and portrait painter Mark Balma. He focused Joshua’s attention on form and drawing and a year later The Atelier Art School became a natural continuation of his study. After three years Joshua continued his pursuit of painting at Hurinenko & Paquet Studio. Jeff Hurinenko taught Joshua the beauty and effectiveness of indirect painting, by sharing what he had come to understand as the methods and techniques of the Flemish and Dutch masters. Joe Paquet’s knowledge and understanding of the prismatic pallete gave means by which one can pursue the infinite beauty in the world of outdoor painting by capturing the light effect of a given moment with speed, accuracy, respect and humility.
Joshua shares his work with his wife Shannon, without whom it would not be here to share. The joy and depth they have in their life together with their children has become the counterpoint to the loss of his brother. This is the emotional landscape from which Joshua paints.
Artist Statement - Landscape Painting
My life has brought me to painting. It has become the way through which I pursue and seek to understand, with all my faculties, that which interests me, stirs my faith, and awkens old memories. I am a representational painter, so when painting a landscape, whether working from nature, photo reference, or memory, I approach the canvas with the aim of painting this life and our time.
The work I have chosen to share gives you window into the variety of subjects I paint. I hope you will find a quiet exploration of everyday subjects under a variety of light effects that tell of the qualities of what interested me about the scene on that given day. I am into their poetry rather than their grandure, although at times the two share the road. I have found the challenge of painting outside to have awakened and clarified why I paint. Nature is mercurial, and painting in it requires openness, humility and sometimes humor. Going to nature allows me to explore themes and ideas througout several paintings of different subjects continually inspiring me to more sublty and richness, without becoming repeditive and safe. The more I paint, the more I need to paint; it is how I stay present to the gift of the day.
In addition to the work shown here, I also paint still-lifes and interiors. I accept commissions and look forward to opprotunities to share the work.
