Experience

I am a traditional artist (painting and drawings) and writer originally from the northern suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota USA. I primarily write prose, short stories, fiction, sci-fi and fantasy, as well as some poetry. My paintings are done with acrylic on canvas or canvas/watercolor paper. My drawings are generally in graphite or charcoal. I also use Paintshop Pro to merge digital elements into my paintings and sketches.

About my Paintings:

I began painting in 2002 after a long hiatus from the visual arts. Almost immediately I felt myself draw to the works of Franz Marc (Particularly Blue Horses that resides at the Walker Art Center), and Georgia O’Keefe. I realized early on that I liked the idea of bio-morphic forms and the gentle suggestive feeling presented in both artists work. As a result I gave up attempting realism and started working purely on the form and emotive aspects of my subject. As this has been my goal, abstract and impressionistic styles have been the most apt form to describe my work. Alternately, (for an added sense of realism) I also work on faces, and portraiture in graphite and charcoal.

The main subjects of my works have been horses, females, emotional forms and abstract emotive forms. I am primarily drawn to the subject of horses, largely in part that I love the animals, have ridden for a number of years, and my travels around the midwest (in Minnesota, Nebraska, Texas and Iowa respectively) have shown me the importance of the horse in history and in life.

About my Writing:

I am a graduate from the Minnesota Center for Arts Education (a.k.a. Perpich Center for Arts Education), Arts High School Literary Arts program 1995. Since graduation I have been actively writing and publishing my work on and offline. Writing has always been a very important part of my life. It was the first artform I found my voice in as a writer, poet, survivor, midwesterner, woman, and prose writer. I continue to develop my art via online means and through my own personal experiences. My genres of interest include: fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction (particularly related to history, anthropology and archaeology).

As of 1/25/06 I am working on a sci-fi novella, and finishing up the last of the academic writing for my masters degree
