Prairie toned hues and themes of experiencing the subtle calm beauty of nature are projected from Shayann Hoffers art exhibit seen at the WEAC building in Willmar MN. The common theme to Hoffer work is written in poetic verses noting that her art documents the spaces in between. This space in between is a wonderful concept and triggers ideas of bridging figure and ground as seen in her velvety appearing images of the pocket studies. It also brings up secret sacred images of exploring and experiencing nature and seen in Cattail Query and Moving Milkweed. The subjects of the paintings seem to be expressing the joy of growing up rural. The subject matter was interesting, and so was composition and style of the paintings. A modified impressionistic style use used as a guide for each work. An organic grid also organized the compositions. Because the grid is not rigid it complements the organic subjects rather than showing a harsh contrast. Colors are for the most part earth tones with placements of small bold complementary colors. These colors develop the feeling of motion and energy. The objects appear to be in motion and are not static snapshots in time. They are more like capturing a memory. The grids changes it scale and is broken in places, offering a new look at the object or drawing attention to the spaces around the objects. This art showing was very interesting. The rural subject matter brought back young memories of exploring nature. The use of the organic grid made the pieces intellectually appealing, and the artist used her vision break the pattern at important place to draw the viewer attention to the spaces in between.
