With an interest to honor my ancestors, family, and culture, this work attempts counter stereotypes and myths associated with Americas first indigenous group with a series of sculptures that reflect the vitality and spirit of Native Americans. Inspired by an artist who creates three dimensional paintings while studying abroad in Mexico last year, the nine sculptures have been created using chicken wire and colored nylons. eight of the figures are human forms and include buffalo heads, and ode to our family&rsquo;s namesake and others are more sculptural and integrate organs from the human form. Colored is applied and added to the surface to symbolize bloodshed and represent the connection with my ancestry. Half of the figures have nylon, and do not because the ones with nylon represent people here, and without represents people in the spirit world. The work represents a loss of culture and provides insights into what is needed to maintain awareness for future generations. It is an attempt to honor my family, ancestors, and Native American culture.
