This is Wade Stadium, home of the Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League. The Wade is an excellent example of stadium architecture of the depression era--it features a wonderful grandstand, complete with sightline blocking steel beams and lots of brick, not to mention the ability to give even the casual fan the chance to experience a game as it would have been played 40+ years ago. On this particular night the Duluth Huskies were taking on the Mankato Moondogs--a great game that had Mankato leave with a win after extra innings.
The Northwoods League seems to field teams that fit nicely into these types of parks--other examples that I've visited include Mayo Field in Rochester, MN, Athletic Park in Wasau, WI, Carson Park in Eau Claire, WI and Copeland Park in La Crosse, WI.
The only problem with getting good photos of this park and others of the same generation is the "chicken wire." I'm sure it is done with insurance and the safety of fans in mind, but it can get old when watching 9 innings of ball through a chain link fence. Other than that, there really isn't anything to complain about at the Wade. I wish we had a few of these old parks in the Twin Cities.
