This photo was taken off of the Gunflint Trail in October, 2008. The hiking trail this was taken from was the Magnetic Rock Trail, and as a previous photo I took mentioned, it was affected by the 2007 Ham Lake fire. In my mind, this is a great "Smokey Bear" shot--dark, foreboding, monochromatic. However, it wouldn't be fair to use this as an example of the ugliness brought on by a forest fire--the color version of the image shows excellent fall color, lots of yellows and reds as the land shows life just over a year after the fire. The lighting was also dramatic--the sun was out behind me but as seen in the photo, there were moody clouds in the area. I'll load the color version to show the difference next...
