During many trips back and forth to Bismarck, North Dakota I observed many drainage ditches. These ditches have drained the vast prairie pothole region of habitat for migratory birds and other animals that depend on them. The region has recently experienced wild swings in precipitation from year to year. The potholes and marshes used to hold water from wet years for the dry years, many have been drained. This watercolor is not your typical, idylic landscape, it shows man's influence on the land and nature, which has consequences.
