The folk birds of El Salvador are symbols of my Indigneous ancestors. Out of underground resistance and survival, the Indingeous Maya-Lenca people’s creation story is in bondage, clandestine and hidden in plain sight. The celestial bird who laid the egg which bore the first ancestor has only survived through the folk art of colorfully painted napkins holders on the kitchen table, seen but not spoken. Although fractured she is still powerful and a symbol of survival and bittersweet hope.
