One of a series of still life paintings of storage areas in museums.
Christine Jones Herbaly invited me to look behind the scenes at the James J Hill historic house. In her office I set objects on her filing cabinets: an in-out box, a puzzle box, a statuette of Hill, and a bottle excavated from the hill house grounds.
The statuette was sculpted by Enid Yandell. I read Mrs Hill’s Journal entries detailing James J Hill‘s visit to sit for this sculpture at Yandell’s NY studio. Yandell wrote a book about living in Chicago working as a sculptor at the 1893 worlds fair.
The puzzle is one Hill enjoyed playing with his children.
