The project "Notes toward Drawing a Brown Figure" makes physical a radical reshaping of my visual vocabulary. During my time at graduate school, I realized that I unconsciously draw figures whose skin tone is lighter than my own. Each note represents an attempt to draw a “brown figure” or to understand what that might mean. The piece as a whole represents a self-determined ritual to end internalized oppression.
Three hundred and twenty notes were installed in the proportions of a Mayan ceremonial cloth as part of the 2018 MFA Thesis Exhibition at Cranbrook Art Museum.
