As an artist I often consider the wonder of sight and the act of seeing. The verb to "see" seems so straightforward yet it is such a complex process both conceptually and physically. The picture of this work makes the text appear much more simply than in person as it collapses the dimensionality of the text. When viewed in three dimensions the text is much more elusive. Starting at the top of the sculpture, each layer of ball chain defines an edge of a letter successively to the bottom. If viewed too close the eye has a hard dime grasping the depth and it can create a strange sense of vertigo. Also the piece is not static. Anyone walking by the work will make the ball chain move by disrupting the air around the work.
