I originally started this piece in 2006 during a time in my life where I found it difficult to sleep. An amazing grief counselor had pointed me to Psalm 4:8. I knew right away that I wanted to get this passage down on canvas, and the idea of building the lettering with heavy texture came to me easily. But not the image. Over the years I repainted it several times but it was never right.
Then 13 years later, as I was cuddling my youngest son at bedtime, listening to his relaxed breathing, this unfinished piece came to mind and I could finally visualize what it was supposed to look like.
"I will lie down and sleep in peace, O Lord, for you alone make me dwell in safety."
