When I visited in Oaxaca in 1992 my themes evolved. My inner and outer musings started by honoring the vendedoras. Then I documented the markets and finally the courtyards. I met his woman the day before I left Oaxaca back in that rich summer of inspiration in July of 1992. Each encounter was special and at times difficult. Here is a woman carrying many turkeys. I asked to take her picture, and her wary expression tells all. I enclose my poem and my photo so you can see how I work and what inspires me. I really did seek to honor her, but I feel her uncertainty and wariness about the gringo asking for her image. "What are you taking from me? What are you giving back." sigh...all for art...yet truly what is given back?
