Community members were asked to loan a pitcher for this installation. Viewers were invited to pour themselves a cup of water, then leave their cup on the shelves (right). The vertical colors are keyed to architectural elements in the gallery, while the green wall references the green screen of digital projections.
Pitchers are something a family usually has just one of, making that decision uniquely expressive of the dining or decorating experience. A wide variety of tastes, values, and memories are represented, leading to speculation about the kinds of people who own each pitcher gathered here.
The “reflections” of individual experiences and memories are illustrated as light shines through each empty cup. While “universal,” this common conveyance for water is far from neutral.
