My medium of choice is watercolor because I love the way paint and water mix and flow together in unexpected ways. Although I have dabbled in other media, I keep coming back to watercolor because there is so much to learn. I continue to take workshops which challenge and inspire me to try new approaches.
I generally paint from my photographs - street scenes, markets, chickens, fields. I also enjoy plein air painting and sketching. Influenced by excellent teachers, I usually begin with a black and white value sketch working out the composition before beginning the painting. I continue to concentrate on the power of good design. I am primarily a representational painter, but I am trying to break out of this mold and paint in a freer style with large brushes and less control. I admire and try to emulate artists who transform any subject into a strong composition.
I paint in my home studio as well as with a group of artists. I find that mutual support and critique are valuable. Although I enter shows, have won awards, and sell my paintings, I paint simply because I love it.
