For over 20 years my works have been abstract reflections on the forces of nature which surround our journey through life. Aspects of nature communicate with us daily. Standing on the banks of the Mississippi or the rocky shores of Lake Superior, at one moment you may be struck by the soothing glistening ripples. At another moment you may feel the raw force of the waves.
I’ve also long been inspired by Japanese and Chinese calligraphy. The marks and energetic strokes in the looser calligraphic modes communicate much to me even though I lack knowledge of literal meaning.
I consider calligraphy and all forms of the handwritten word as natural means of unique human expression, a part of human nature. As part of the natural world, we communicate through gesture, symbolic stroke, and the codified symbols of language. Recently I've focused attention on the calligraphic and on the symbolic stroke.
My Art Is... #1-#9 series references the calligraphic stroke and the handwritten word. I celebrate the power of mark and stroke to communicate whether by words or intuitive gestures.
In acrylic and ink paintings on canvas and paper, I continue to celebrate the stroke, the symbolic mark, and the handwritten word. Nature and language-like symbols move together with the touch of the hand.
For me making art is also a journey of discovery. I hope viewers looking at my works take their own journey of imagination, completing the works as they view them.
