Hey Sam,

I know you weren't insulting anyone, I come from a family of engineers. Dilbert is a bit of a hero with us. But it is still important to understand the background of the people involved with this project. The developers, project manager, webmaster, designer, marketing people, etc... are all artists or actively working in the art world. They understand and appreciate intangible and sometimes impractical things. That is something most engineers and DIlbert don't do well. Having all of these people involved also means that I am not the only person on the project that knows the daily struggle of being an artist. But, I am the person bringing your thoughts to the table.

Oh, and Damn you impersonal web communication that does not allow for nuance of meaning, damn you to helllllll....

Thanks Ray,

I know you are all trying to improve the communities you live and work in and that none of you are trying to undermine this project. In no way do I want to stop the momentum of MM. But, I did want to give you some things to think about as you proceed. Let me repeat that I think the Minnesota Mediocre concept is great and I am excited to so see you bring it into existence.

So, get to it. You know where I'm at on the matter.

"Idea:
How hard to is it make 15' x 8' 'sails' of steel half pipe floating 9' above the ground for a Gabriel to "tag" and have the steel as it rusts rip and destroy his " writing " on the surface?

coyote 256"

I'm a little confused here. By half pipe you mean like the skateboarders use? How is it mounted 9' above the ground? Mounted virticaly/standing upright or horizontally like the skateboarding rink?

Without more details, I will say generally there are two problems when trying to make something: problems of complexity/design and problems of scale. The latter is more at work here. It would not be "hard" to do, just rather involved. And if I understand correctly, you are thinking of steel thin enough to disintegrate in a reasonable amount of time? First, steel is very resilient so it won't "tear", it would just rust through over time and fall apart in a more web-like effect (the paint would impede the rust considerably as well). Secondly, steel that thin is very, very sharp. Imagine a paper cut that can slice open your hand. If you go heavier it is safer but more resilient and harder to work with. Just some thoughts.

Brendon

Thank you.

You are of the village that will make this Coyote Stone Soup of everyone's contribution of the heart.

It will exist in this space before it occurs in real world.

I am honored to know you.

I need to run it by Colin and see if it will do the job of excluding the Walker from risk in this project.( we must respect Colin's obligation to his employers)

You are right about the idea being Big Pipe, but the "tearing " is about the rust tearing through the paint. Safety is a concern as other writers would immediately enter into the writers duel.

Thank you for the information;

Does your Father's facility contract to build such a thing?

Lets talk on Sunday.

He could set you up with darn near anything you want. People often ask "is this possible" when explaining something to him and the immediate response is always "anything is possible."

Hello all, Dilbert here. I'm the project manager for mnartists.org and excited to see the ways you're using the site and forums. Next week I'm giving a paper on mnartists.org at a Museums & the Web conference. The session is about building online community and one of the tips is "let the community help define the rules." This topic will be the example.

Okay, so a couple of practical points about the project at hand. Colin's right: if you're going to copy and reupload mnartists.org images, you need to ask the artists for permission. Using the postcard feature to assemble candidates is a great idea, but we can't automate the process for you. You'll need to send the cards to your project coordinator (Ray?) and go from there. We're in the process of developing a feature that's perfect for this project -- unfortunately, it won't be ready for your April 15 proposal deadline. The feature will allow registered users of the site to create collections of mnartists.org work and artists. You'll be able to keep these collections private or make them public. The collections feature will be available this summer.

Hello Robin, thanks for dropping in. You obviously wield great power... no offense by the Dilbert comment, right?...

I like the collections idea. I was thinking along those lines every time I'd check out somebody's work when I saw it on the homepage but then I'd forget their name later and couldn't find it again.

Keep up the good work!

Robin - that's wonderful news! I think a lot of people will utilize this feature - currently, I just bookmark my favorites, but it would be nice to have a way (beyond the "you guys are good" thread) to share.

Thanks for all of your hard work here - good luck at the conference next week!
