Introduce yourself here!

I'm Alicia and I'll be acting as the host for this forum. I work at the Walker Art Center in Education & Community Programs.

I'll let Julie talk a bit about herself and her work and how it relates to the topics we'll be discussing here.

In general, however, we plan to explore how online communities develop, how individuals become a part of the community and what needs a community serves. All the while keeping the idea in mind of the similarities and differences between physical cities or communities and virtual or hyper-communities.

Welcome!

Hi, my name is Sam and I've noticed there are a lot of introductions involved in being part of an online community.

Seriously though, I am a metal sculptor that happened to get sucked into this site. And now, I just can't leave...

Hi, I'm Lauren DeSteno, an artist, designer and student at the University of Minnesota. I have been involved in "online" communities since 1992 (yeppers, I was 12) - back before the internet as we know it - where folks would dial out with their 600 baud modem and scan posts like this in a DOS environment. Scary stuff. Makes me feel like an old-timer!

(Back in my day...no one could be on a BBS at the same time! We had to take turns! And when we were done we had to stand outside in the cold and walk up large hills with weights strapped to our testicles! Wait...okay...um...)

heheh. Hiya Lauren, Sam, Julie, Colin, Kemi, Meredith, and Alicia. Nice to hyper-meet you all. Im Ray as half of you know. I'm stuck in this matrix too. And I keep producing content, DOH!
I'm a creative envisionair of sorts hailing from Northeast Minneapolis. I'll be biking around the cities for the rest of my years i'm sure. See ya on the grand rounds.

P.s In my day you had to write entire programs with only 5k of Ram, Vic20 stlye. And we dint have no fancy flopy disks. We recorded binary on analoge cassette tape! And when we played it in the tape deck it would screeech and hiss and glitch out and hurt our ears with harsh white noise music. Thats the way it was and WE LIKED IT!

I would invite the whole hyper-community out to see it if I had the money. Like Andy Kaufman taking everyone out for milk and cookies.
