The full question is:

If not, what do you think is the most suitable second occupation for him or her?

I think that art and artfulness can be used in nearly any career. It is only a matter of attitude and activism - how you live your life, advocate for yourself and your goals, and create a supportive community where you can thrive.

If our economy continues to create jobs for information workers, it will also create jobs in arts-related fields that exist to make that information presentable, efficient, readable, and beautiful. Not a bad way to make a living.

Right now, I will do anything (almost) closely related for at least $9-10 an hour.

This a question that can not be answered in a generalized way.

There is no one answer. Some would be suited to teaching, some to labor, some to service industry, some to other creative fields, some to corporate jobs.

This should not be considered - we should focus on getting ourselves to a place of comfort in the world as artists. Not what will do in the meantime.

Does it require canvassing the neighborhood with electrical appliances?

Seriously though, I want a job as a technical writer. Where would I start the search?

Look at your list of talents. Think about what will work for you in you later years. I studied documentary photography and writing, (They always say "write what you know about") and have been a woodworker for 30 years, because it pays the bills. What better than to meld it all together! I would consider that to be my best effort as an artist at this point.

Of course its 5am! May be I'm wrong

Strange thing about timing. Last friday I worked with a group of people who were in thier other gigs- writers! I sat in on thier chitchat and heard that things are picking up after two long dry years. Each of them spoke of getting calls as a result of "freebies"; articles written for free for small publications of interest to them. It is a very specialized field and it seems it's really about knowing people in the same area; while I was there thye traded job offers that they not quite good fits with each other.
