Why don't you weigh
> in like this more often?

With regards to the articles, it is probably because I usually don't see when a new one is posted. The text on the front page is just too damn small and I don't usually scroll down. I think welding is ruining my eyesight.

But that is probably not what you meant.

Two thoughts come to mind. One, when I post something like that, there is generally less of a response than when other, more general/personal comments are made. The history of this thread is a good example.

And secondly, it just isn't much "fun" to write a detailed critique of a critique. It feels forced for me, like a homework assignment. Now, I don't make sculpture because it is "fun," but that is where my vocation lies. My vocation is not in arts criticism. When I am here, after toiling away at my "real" work all day, I tend to want to relax or work at gathering "practical" information around the edges (photography, web design, etc). This coincides with my general preference for biographical and technical information about artists so that I might learn something about how to structure my own life. Intention and criticism do not have the primacy for me that they may have for others. But I am not minimizing their importance. Some may prefer criticism over sculpture, doesn't bother me. It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.

So there you have it, more than you wanted to know.

Lauren, the thing is, it's great for artists to talk about others' work in interesting ways. I mean it's great for the artists themselves as well as for the one discussed. I was an artist for 20 years before I ever wrote any critique at all. I started writing because the work I saw by a lot of great artists was not getting talked about, and was thus just vanishing without a trace. I really, really believe that artists have a responsibility to pay attention to each other's work and communicate about it, if they want any artwork to be noticed by the world. If not us, then who?

Ann - I truly agree with you. I could go to the MCAD show and write a critique. I feel semi-competent engaging in that activity. However, I feel I have no basis to critique a critique. It's not my field, and I'm pretty forgiving (wussy?) about the whole thing. The most discriminatory judgement I can make (aside from lousy writing) is "Hey, this reviewer isn't right for me. We don't share the same values and opinions, and that's cool."

His review might be perfectly suited to another audience who will happily use his writings to base their equally valid art-viewing decisions.

I applaud you. Sounds like you truly stand your ground and act on your beliefs and I admire that.

You know, I will go see the show at MCAD sometime in the next week and report back. Sound good?

Very cool idea.

No - who is Dave Hickey? Could you post some links to his work?

Off topic for a sec: Ann - just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten about your "love it or it dies" art idea - I think that would be a great show. I can't take on anything new right now, but I would love to partner up with you this summer if you're interested. To avoid a rambly thread, you can email me at lauren_desteno@yahoo.com, or we could eventually start a new topic or something - get the community involved. Thanks -

Lauren

I had to actually scan the main page to figure out what the heck you were refering to but then I caught on. I actually included quite a nice picture of a rockpile with it as well that apparently didn't make the cut.

Glad I could make your day there Lux.

What's with the erasing again, Lux? It's things like that which may make one question your good faith in posting here.

Sam

P.S. In the future, perhaps everyone could "quote original" when replying to Lux. That way a record can be preserved of these conversations that will make them much more coherent when viewed later.

Are you SURE you're a non-artist?

Coyote's perfomance is much better, IMHO.
