These are indeed amazing times. I have been working with the Office of Tourism on an initiative with the Scenic Byway folks, we have 20 in Minnesota. We are the state with the 3rd most in the country. Last year we worked to help these community leaders understand how to expand opportunities for tourists on the byways to see arts, cultural, historic, and natural sites in their communities. With some federal highway funds we created a promotional brochure that reached 430,000 households.

Just did a lecture to the statewide group of scenic byway folks on how to initiate artists studio tours in their communities. It is so exciting to see how so many different communities and areas are engaging the arts to build their communities and quality of life.

Sarah, our time is to help you. You and the other artists across the state make it the place it is. Thank you!

Bob,

This is really interesting. The scenic byways information is new to me. The tours sound like a great idea. If you and the Office of Tourism are interested, we could create online tours on mnartists.org that correspond to the scenic tours. It might be a good way to promote the project. Do you think people might be interested in something like that?

I have two questions about the guidelines:

I consider myself a visual artist, but will probably include technology and possibly video in my project. It uses technology, but isn't made on a computer - it just combines some elements of technology with more traditional materials - and will probably take some sort of sculptural form. Will the panelists think I am applying in the wrong category if I apply in visual arts rather than new media? What category would be more appropriate?

What qualities would a project need to "strengthen the creative community and the state of Minnesota"? Does your project have to have a plan for exhibition or outreach?

Thanks!

The project I am referring to is the Scenic Byways project. It would also be an interesting use of mnartists.org's functionality.

Last years project was seen as a success both locally and by the feds. We received another grant for this year and are doing a large scale map featuring arts, cultural, historic, and park sites across the state and contact information for all of the scenic byway folks. The partnership is the Office of Tourism, Department of Natural Resources, the Minnesota Historical Society, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Sounds big, but it is really just 4 of us one from each group and some support staff from Tourism. Quite amazing what you can accomplish with partnerships. The profile of folks that use scenic byways is almost the same as the profile of a cultural tourist. they spend more money, are interested in communities of all types, like real experiences grounded in culture, and often spend more time in communities. I believe our website has some information on the project. Look for the map/promo piece this spring.

We are looking for information on how the positive things you are doing with the state funds can also have an impact on your community. Community can be defined as cultural, a neighborhood, the state, the field of artists you work with. It doesn't necessary mean a public performance, but that could be a component.

It sounds to me from your description about your work that it will be more appropriate in the visual arts category.

With the statement indicated in your question it is asking you to build value for the work that you do. You do not have to have a plan for exhibition or outreach rather to get you to talk about why your work is important to this community.

Can I get a state grant to cover the time I spend volunteering moderating these Forums?! Ha! That contributes to the cultural community of Mn...

Sam, Thanks for your help. These forums are a great way to keep conversations going across the state. Quite an amazing system Colin and the folks from McKnght have set up.

Colin and Sam thanks for setting this up. This has been a great way to communicate with the field. I hope to use it again in the future for some of the other grant programs.
Thanks for all the questions posted tonight.
