Raku Clay Workshop
with The Clay Empire

Join the Clay Empire in the exciting quest to tame Mud, Fire and a pinch of Alchemy in the Summer 2005 Raku Clay Workshops!
Raku is an Americanized Japanese pottery technique that was innovated by Paul Soldner in the 1950's & 1960's. Become a part of the excitement and join Chad Everson and The Clay Empire as the innovation continues. The Traditional Japanese use of Raku ware was in their sacred Tea Ceremony. Raku ignited my imagination in the Fall of 1988. Now let me share this exciting clay process with you. The Clay Empire has state of art Raku kilns, clay, glazes and equipment as well as experimental kilns.

1. In these workshops students will meet at the home studio of The Clay Empire on a Sunday at 1pm-5pm.

The Studio of The Clay Empire
32128 160th St.
Princeton, MN 55371
theclayempire@yahoo.com

> Students will watch a Raku firing demonstration and get their first taste of glazing and firing a Raku clay pinch pot created by the artist. You will be able to take this pinch pot home that night so you can show it off all week!
> Students will be encouraged to create Raku Clay Vessels in studio with 5# of clay.
> Then after the Sunday class your Raku Clay Vessels will be dried and Bisque fired for you by the artist.

2. Then on Saturday we will meet again 1pm-5pm to Raku Fire your Raku Clay Creations.
> You will be able to take home your creations that night!
> Each Student will also receive The Clay Empire Raku Workshop T-Shirt!

> Wool & Denim are great choices in attire

nathaniel stern | marcus neustetter

22 April 2005 - 14 May 2005 | Opening: 18h00 Friday 22 April by Stephen
Hobbs | Walkabout: 10h30 Saturday 30 April

In their second duo show, marcus neustetter and nathaniel stern will use
simple technologies to explore different ways of looking. With experiment02,
Neustetter continues on his Digital Frottage track, while Stern embarks on
what he has been ironically calling Compressionism. Both artists are using
various capture and display modes, sending physical objects and bodies, over
time, through digital and analogical mediations. The work is intended to ask
us all to ³look again².

This dialogue developed out of their first exhibition, The Getaway
Experiment, at The Artspace, and getawayexperiment.net, a commissioned
project for Turbulence ( http://www.turbulence.org ).

Continuing experimentation with his Digital Frottage, scanning, photocopying
and photographically exposing his laptop screen, Marcus Neustetter is
exploring the concept of ³scanning² space without the use of digital
technology. What could the analogue equivalent be for the capturing of light
and space? Using sensitized paper and a development process with ammonia
fumes, Neustetterıs site-specific work is scanning physical space at
Franchise. This visual outcome continues to explore his interest in the
aesthetic translation and abstraction of experimental digital and analogue
inputs and outputs.

performance (photo by Lara Rivera)

Compressionism is a digital performance, and an analog archive; it utilizes
various "perform and capture," "edit and exhibit" modes, and the resulting
art-objects-as-evidence ask viewers to explore different ways of looking.
The first Compressionist studies use the reflective beam of a moving digital
scanner, over time, to compress large spaces or objects into images the size
of a small sheet of paper. Once a performance is digitized and compressed,
the computer acts as multiple frames for its subject; it's used to process,
clarify, and unpack the study - both literally, and metaphorically. The
resulting prints are intended to provoke a complex conversation between
artist, performance, mediation tool, art-object(s) and viewer. More info:

about the artists

marcus neustetter has been developing projects addressing the relationship
between art and technology. These take the form of mobile, installation, and
web artworks tackling the translation of data through different online and
offline platforms. In this process he has been exploring the digital and
analogue ways of representing virtual experiences. Marcus Neustetter has
exhibited and has been actively involved in developing opportunities and
platforms for local digital art through projects in South Africa and Europe,
these include ARS Electronica (Austria), Transmediale.03 (Germany) and
E-tester (Spain). As director (with Stephen Hobbs) of The Trinity Session
and sanman (southern african new media art network) and The Gallery
PREMISES, Marcus Neustetter is actively involved in developing cultural
strategies through a range of projects. Currently he is consulting to UNESCO
DigiArts Africa.

As a follow-up to the press release from Nathaniel Stern I would like you to
know that Nathaniel is teaching a course this summer called net.art: online
interventions

Even if you wonıt be on campus this summer you can take a course online and
keep working towards your degree.

Questions? online@mcad.edu or stop in to our office (Morrison 101).

.........................
VC-4210-10
net.art: online interventions
3 credits
This class will cover the benefits, shortcomings, history and production of
internet-specific art. Our main focus will be to push the envelope in this
quickly-settling medium, in order to create online and/or networked
interventionist ( http://design.concordia.ca/publicart/artinterv.html )
spaces - artworks with the power to engage viewers in dialogue, transform
their perceptions of relevant concepts. The term will see us through three
full, grant-ready proposals, complete with sketches and proof of concept
pages; one of these proposals will be completed as your final project. Note
that although they are not required, collaborative projects between students
in this class will be enthusiastically encouraged - there is a lot of work
involved in this process. Enrolled students must have experience with FTP
software, image scanning and web page formatting - enough to make
good-looking, working, online proposals. This is a concept and
proposal-driven class, focused on how contemporary, multimedia ideas can get
funding, and be put into practice; you do not need all necessary technical
skills when you start, but will research them as part of your assignments.
I'll pull in the reigns if you are in over your head. As needed for your
projects, resources and tech support may or may not include (and are not
limited to) advanced HTML & JavaScript, CSS & csactions, PHP, MySQL, Flash,
Max/MSP/Jitter, Digital Video and Shockwave (Director and Lingo). MCAD will
provide each student with a web account for the duration of the course.

Prerequisite Course: Portfolio.net, Developing an Online Identity,
Interactive Media 1 or equivalent experience; participants must have a good
working knowledge of web design technologies (HTML, intermediate JavaScript
& CSS). Ideally, students will have additional experience with digital
video, flash, or multimedia programming.
Required Software: Text editor (for writing HTML), Adobe Photoshop or
Elements and FTP software, java enabled browser with these plugins
installed: QuickTime, Flash, Shockwave, Realplayer, Flash, Dreamweaver or
BBEdit.
Required Hardware: None but scanner or digital camera, DV camera, and
broadband internet connection (DSL, Cable, T1, ISDN) are highly recommended.
Required Textbook: none.
Required Materials: none.
Class limit: 18.
Required Online Orientation: Opens Tuesday, May 31, 2005
First Class Meeting: Tuesday, June 7, 2005 (all coursework to be completed
by August 15, 2005)
Required Online Meetings: Tuesdays, Noon-1 PM CST
Instructor: Nathaniel Stern
