Call for Art - Chronicled in Clay: Ceramics and the Art of the Story

Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA) seeks art for inclusion in Chronicled in Clay: Ceramics and the Art of the Story, a juried exhibition that examines how contemporary artists express narratives in clay through text, imagery, multiples, and sequence. Chronicled in Clay is presented in conjunction with Claytopia, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts’ (NCECA) 53rd Annual Conference, which explores “the human imagination as a vehicle of restless yearning for a more livable, just, and meaningful world.” Storytelling through visual art develops understanding, sensitivity, and empathy -- qualities that contribute to more compassionate and just communities. Chronicled in Clay speaks to Claytopia’s restless yearning by placing artist and viewer in a dialogue that reimagines how we listen, grow, and learn from each other. In bringing together ceramics and contemporary book arts, this exhibition will provoke new perspectives and challenge existing traditions.

The exhibition will be presented in MCBA's Main Gallery from February 8 - April 28, 2019 with a reception during NCECA.

All clay forms that reference or use language through the use of text or visual symbols will be considered. There will also be consideration for sculptural artwork that is made in collaboration between ceramicists and book artists. There is no entry or participation fee. Selected artists will be responsible for all shipping costs. While on view, all work will be fully insured and presented in secure cases.

The jury will consist of the following: Torey Erin (MCBA Exhibitions and Artist Programs Manager), Monica Edwards Larson (MCBA Board member and artist / proprietress of Sister Black Press), and Tetsuya Yamada (artist and faculty at the University of Minnesota).

Selected artists will be notified by August 21, 2018. Selected artists' works must be received/delivered to MCBA no later than January 30, 2019. More specific shipping information will be provided to selected artists.
