Call for Artists: Poetry Post

Northfield Poet Laureate

The Northfield Poet Laureate, Rob Hardy, is seeking to commission an artist to design and build a Poetry Post for installation in downtown Northfield in September.

What is a Poetry Post? A Poetry Post is like a Little Free Library for the display of a single poem at a time. In its basic form, it consists of a weather-proof display frame (a Poetry Box) mounted on a post. The Poetry Box would be used to display a rotating collection of poetry by local poets curated by the Poet Laureate.

  • The Poetry Post can be created out of any durable material suitable for outdoor display, but must incorporate a weather-resistant box designed for the display of poetry.
  • The post and frame must include original artwork (e.g., painting, carving, tiling) that harmonizes with the Northfield Riverwalk.
  • The Poetry Box must be visible and accessible to readers.
  • The Poetry Box must accommodate a poem printed on a standard 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper, and may be larger to allow white space around the poem. The box must have a lid that can be opened to insert and remove poems, and the framed area for display of the poem must be protected from the weather with glass or clear plastic.
  • The Poetry Box may be designed to allow both sides of a sheet of paper to be visible (to allow for longer poems or the display of two poems at a time), but this is optional.
  • The Poetry Post creator will consult with the Northfield Poet Laureate to collaborate in the functional and design aspects of the Poetry Post.
