20% Theatre Company is seeking performance submissions for Controlled Burn!
The deadline to apply is Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at 12:00pm.
Controlled Burn was originally created in 2016 by Patrick’s Cabaret, a queer-led performance art incubator founded in Minneapolis in 1986. When Patrick’s Cabaret completed its sunset in 2018, the organization entrusted the continuation of Controlled Burn to 20% Theatre Company.
20% Theatre Company is committed to supporting and vigorously promoting the work of female and transgender theatre artists, and celebrating the unique contribution of these artists to social justice and human rights. We are a queer-led, artist-focused organization. We strive to center artists of color, artists with disabilities, and artists with queer and trans identities, and all the ways these communities intersect. We produce both full-length new plays, as well as artist-created new performance work.
Named for the practice of burning a prairie to promote new growth, Controlled Burn is a space for queer rage, revolution, and reclamation, aimed at regeneration. We seek to create curated space for queer-identified artists, especially queer artists of color and queer artists with disabilities, to present their own short-form works (up to 15 minutes) that speak to the creative destruction and radical rebirth of our current social, political, and cultural climate. Eighteen acts will be selected by three curators, with six artists performing each night. The Controlled Burn 2020 curators are Taja Will, Ondine, and Atlese Robinson, with Marcela Michelle as Artistic Producer.
In 2020, Controlled Burn will perform February 13-15 at The Phoenix Theater in Minneapolis.
Artists selected to participate will be notified by December 20, 2019.
Each performance act will be paid!
