The Arts Partnership (TAP) seeks an accomplished Communications Director with three to five years of communication experience, ideally in an “in-house” leadership role within a complex (number and variety of constituents) nonprofit entity, and covering areas such as feature writing, website content, newsletters and donor communication. The ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels is critical.

The Arts Partnership (TAP) is a nonprofit umbrella arts organization that represents all art forms in Fargo and West Fargo, ND and Moorhead, MN.

We communicate about the arts through various media outlets, including the Fargo Forum, KFGO radio, Fargo INC!, our blog, our e-newsletter and on social media. We also work to ensure that the arts and culture in our community are being spread across many sectors, including the business community, educational centers, government, and the general public. Some of our prominent programs include ChalkFestArtWORKSCommunity Supported Art and our Support Local Art campaign. In summer 2019, we will open Aptitude, a creative incubator at West Acres Mall.

Position Overview

The Communications Director recommends, guides and carries out strategies for all communication, marketing and brand development activities of The Arts Partnership (TAP). The Communications Director broadens and deepens awareness about the arts in our community through a range of traditional (print, broadcast, publications) and new (social, digital, video) media outlets. Key to succeeding in the position will be the ability to establish and cultivate relationships with arts organizations and artists and ensure consistent messaging about TAP’s mission, vision, values, programs and operations to better position TAP as the go-to expert on the arts in our community.

The Communications Director will be accountable to the President & CEO. This is a non-exempt, full time position (40 flexible hours/week as evening and weekend work is expected), salaried with health benefits.

Duties & Responsibilities

Develop and manage an annual strategic communication/marketing plan that advances TAP’s brand, broadens visibility for both TAP specifically and the arts generally, and identifies and speaks to TAP’s multiple audiences. The plan should consider the most effective ways to reach those audiences, using analysis of past performance of efforts to establish strategic direction for the future.
Initiate strategic opportunities to advance the organization’s communication agenda, including identifying target audiences and designing audience-specific strategies.
Design, prepare, adapt the use of communication/marketing materials including print, electronic, video, written reports and social media.
Track and measure the level of engagement with the various communication platforms, so as to make timely adjustments to the strategy as necessary as well as allow for accurate reporting.
Produce content – writing, photography and videos – for traditional print and broadcast media, publications and social/electronic media. This includes 3-4 monthly feature articles for The Forum newspaper and its online iteration
Supervise communication/marketing interns, freelance communication/marketing professionals and volunteers.
Develop and implement social media strategies to support the tactical communication plan and coordinate content and presence across all appropriate media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram) for appropriate posts/tweets.
In partnership with managerial and programming staff, craft content for promotional materials, including the website; maintain the website to best support various site visitors.
Prepare media advisories/releases, manage relationships with traditional media sources and pitch story ideas; collect, track and archive news articles.
Manage TAP’s paid advertising, as a consumer and as a vendor. (TAP subsidizes advertising for its Partners through its e-newsletter and electronic billboards at Fargo Hector Airport).
Arrange, coordinate and serve as a liaison and/or spokesperson for public presentations on behalf of TAP when authorized by the President & CEO.
Collaborate with colleagues in crafting and disseminating compelling collateral materials to educate and inspire/convince funders and key stakeholders; ensure that such materials meet Communication and Brand standards.
Support the overall fundraising strategy for the organization (events, donor appreciation and engagement, etc.).
Manage and grow all media contacts.

Skills, Experiences and Competencies

Required

  • Belief in the arts as a vital part of the social and fiscal health and well-being of a community.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience developing and implementing communication strategies and tactics.
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Shoot and edit publication-quality photographs; ability to shoot and edit video a plus.
  • Relationship-builder with the maturity, flexibility and finesse to “manage by influence.”
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
  • Self-starter, able to work both independently and collaboratively, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
  • Computer proficiency in basic software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe and basic website programming).

Applicants must have the demonstrated ability to:

  • Envision the big picture and also paint in the details.
  • Serve as an external spokesperson for the organization upon authorization from the President & CEO.
  • Work with minimal supervision, both independently and cooperatively, and use independent judgment for prioritizing and decision-making.
  • Plan strategically/tactically and project-manage.
  • Be diplomatic and maintain confidentiality.
