Mission: The Minnesota Museum of American Art inspires people to discover themselves and their communities through American art.
Description: The Minnesota Museum of American Art (the M) is in an exciting, transformational time as we work towards opening a new art museum in late 2018. The M seeks a Communications Intern to assist with marketing and publicity for the museum’s exhibitions and programs, as well as helping to create content for the M’s website and social media platforms. Interns can expect to gain experience and/or knowledge in: writing concisely and with verve; visual storytelling; social media management, messaging, and tools; and WordPress; audience cultivation and communications; digital content strategy and publishing; day-to-day operations of a small museum; arts marketing and media relations.  The Communications Intern works under the supervision of the Communications Manager, but is expected to perform many daily tasks independently. Work Environment & Schedule: Must be able to successfully work both independently and collaboratively in an office setting. Work schedule is within Monday through Friday, but does require occasional work on evenings and weekends, based on department needs and event schedules.
Responsibilities Could Include:

  • Create and maintain online calendar listings of the M’s programs and events.
  • Research target audiences, collect lists, enter into/maintain database of contacts, build specialized emails that can be used to market a variety of the museum’s programs and events.
  • Track and report marketing activity; gather and analyze Google and social media analytics, and monitor statistics.
  • Assist with compiling and organizing M photography and video for promotional use.
  • Compile press kits and materials for media, and respond to press queries as needed.
  • Prepare copy for calendar listings; assist in writing and editing press releases.
  • Write and assist in editing materials for the M’s quarterly member newsletter, digital e-newsletters, and targeted e-blasts for special events/projects.
  • Create news and event posts for the M’s website.
  • Prepare images, video, and copy for posting and promotions via multiple social media and digital platforms, including Google AdWords.
  • Occasional event photography to create images for promotion and/or social media use.
  • Assist with event logistics and table on behalf of the M as needed.


  • Ideal candidates are at a junior or senior level in college, in a graduate degree program, or are post-collegiate and looking for experience in the field.
  • Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and fluency with social media platforms (particularly Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) and tools.
  • Be self-motivated and able to work efficiently without supervision, but open to direction and mentorship.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a keen attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Nimble in the face of change and game to take on a variety of tasks as needed, willingness to learn new skills and experiment.
  • Prior public relations, marketing, graphic design, and/or writing experience a plus.
  • Graphic design, video, and/or photography skills a plus.
  • As a storytelling voice for this art museum, some familiarity with the regional arts community, art history, and the M’s programming is desired.

This position pays $9.00 an hour and is part-time (approximately 15 hours a week), therefore not eligible for benefits. This position is temporary, 6 months in length; anticipated start date in late July 2018 or early August (flexible).
College Credit Available: Internships can be tailored to meet individual college credit requirements. Interns are responsible for full disclosure of requirements during the interview process, for ensuring paperwork is given to supervisors in a timely manner, and that all required documents are submitted when due.
