Funded Fellowships for Emerging Curators

Emerging Curators Institute

The Emerging Curators Institute (ECI) is a new initiative designed to support the individual practices of Minnesota-based emerging curators from diverse backgrounds. The first of its kind in the region, the program aims to foster critical dialogue around curatorial practice and to provide professional development opportunities for Midwest-based emerging curators. Based in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota, the program will offer funded fellowships to four emerging curators.

Program Director, Jehra Patrick, developed the program in response to her own non-traditional path to curating, and from listening to the experiences of others. On the need for such a program, Patrick says, “Curation is a challenging field to get into and has been historically limited by economic and educational access. Support is needed, especially in the Midwest, to expand access to curatorial education and conversation. ECI will provide direct support to individuals through paid fellowships and will expand learning opportunities for all by making our series of programs open to the general public.”

Over the course of the nine-month fellowship, participants will produce an exhibition or curatorial project to be presented in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area in 2020. Throughout the program year (July 2019 through March 2020) fellows will meet regularly with mentors, guest curators, and field professionals who will guide their learning through a collaborative educational model that allows for individual focus and development.

The program is accepting applications for fellowships until June 28th. For more information and to apply, visit

As a part of the fellowship program, ECI will invite curators from around the United States to the Twin Cities to participate in a series of public programs addressing topics related to curatorial practice. All of these programs will be free and open to the public. As programs are confirmed, they will be posted at
