The Future residency invites artists, weirdos, punks, analog photographers, witches, healers, tattooers, mediums, esoteric researchers, zinesters, astrologers, acupuncturists and beyond to engage with the space and community. This includes public, performance, and installation artists, those working in social practice and beyond.
Residencies last ten days, give or take, and residents are asked to culminate their stay in an exhibit, workshop, talk, presentation, seance, public art project, procession, publication, dinner or otherwise.
The residency hosts one person at a time. We love animals, but aren't able to host any during the residency. The space is not scent free, as there are essential oils and incense in use.
The Future is a project space, artist market, Aquarian lab, artist residency, library, workshop and event space, and studio in South Minneapolis, on Dakota and Anishinaabe traditional, ancestral, unceded, occupied territories.
There are three types of residencies offered: Witch Residency, Weaver's Residency + Riso Residency. All are based out of The Future. All submissions are through the form below. Please indicate what you're applying for in the application.
The residency call will close October 15, 2019 for residencies in 2020. Residencies are full through 2019.
For the first time, we’re charging for this residency. Why? Because I kept pulling 6 of Pentacles and having the residency come up in readings and everything is pointing towards an exchange. I still want the residency to be accessible and affordable, so have come up with sliding scale and scholarship options. So in the spirit of valuing everyone’s time/energy, here is the cost breakdown:
Sliding scale: $15-25/a day. For a 10--day residency, this works out to $150-$250.
If you’d like to use the Riso while in residence, the cost is $350. The Riso is a finicky creature, and requires a lot more time and attention, and maintenance. This fee covers all ink (we have 13 colors) and masters--all you supply is the paper.
Residents are encouraged to offer workshops/readings/healings for a fee to offset the cost of the residency.
There are scholarships available for this residency--please email [email protected] to inquire about a scholarship. POC/queer/trans* folks will be prioritized for scholarships. If you would like to sponsor an artist residency, please also email!
This is a residency for any and all witches, healers, magic workers, astrologers, artists, weirdos, tarot readers, herbalists, etc. to work on whatever you'd like during your time at the residency.
Unless indicated otherwise, we'll assume this is the residency you're applying for.
The Weaver's Guild of Minnesota offers one resident a free class and use of their equipment/work space to an artist working in weaving + fiber arts. Artists stay at The Future and have use of the Weaver's Guild equipment. (The Weaver's Guild is located 3 miles from The Future.)
**The Weaver's Guild Residency is free for residents--there is no residency cost for this one.**
The Future has a GR3770 Riso printer with 13 color drums. This printer takes up to 11x17” and while it has a mind of its own, is really fun to work with.
ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:
WHAT THE FUTURE RESIDENCY IS:
-A short-term residency in Minneapolis for individual artists/researchers/makers/weirdos/witches. Residents are provided a comfortable space to live + work in for around 10 days.
WHAT THE FUTURE RESIDENCY IS NOT:
-The Future residency is not staffed. This means the space is run by people with other jobs and responsibilities. Residents should be self-sufficient, self-directed, and responsible for their projects and time.
-This is a solo residency, so while you may take the opportunity to interact with the community around The Future, you will be the only resident in the space. It only sleeps one person, so while collaborations are encouraged, we’re only able to host one person sleeping at a time.
-Residents have access to a small workspace room with a bed, a shared larger work/study/workshop space with a shared kitchen, and a shower, bicycle, and magical library. All accommodations come with linens, towels, tea, kitchen supplies, etc.
-Promotion on social media, The Future's newsletter and website for resident's events, and residents are included on our online roster.
-Free attendance in any workshop taking place at The Future during your residency.
-Post-residency support like letters of recommendation, promotion of events, connection to other residents.
WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED:
-Transportation. The Future is in Minneapolis, a quick 15-20 minute drive from the airport. Depending on our schedules we might be able to pick you up from the airport/bus/train station. We can provide a bicycle for your use in the summer and bus passes.
-Meals/groceries. The Future has a kitchen with a gas stove, mini fridge, and cooking utensils. Residents should plan their own meals. A list of recommended restaurants and grocery stores is provided.
-Studio space. The residency space has a small table and chair and bed, but is not suited for large-scale work, painting, ceramics, or anything that takes up a lot of space or makes a mess. Residents should plan on bringing or buying any supplies or equipment they'll need.
The application closes October 15. Selected residents will be notified by November 1.
The Weaver's Guild of Minnesota offers one resident a free class and use of their equipment/work space (dates to be scheduled depending on class availability, with the artist to pay any supply fees.)
