Video Out Call for Submissions: What is (a) Punk?

Opportunity

VIVO Media Arts Centre (Vancouver, Canada)

This call-for-submissions starts off with a transcription of a conversation between artist, director of Metro Media art centre, and punk documentarian, Lenore Herb, and her then collaborator/partner Dermot Foley. Late one night, near the end of the '70s, the two are deep in a discussion on what they call ‘The Psycho-Sexual Power Game’ and the problems—

L: With avant-garde art!
D: Living on the edge, working on the edge, dealing with everyone else who is on the edge—
L: —yeah—
D: —making it back to the mainstream as a product—
L: —so that people who live on the edge can survive.

These lines stick with me: “Living on the edge, working on the edge, dealing with everyone else who is on the edge—so that people who live on the edge can survive.”

What is (a) Punk? And are you one? Video Out invites works that address, identify, engage with, and challenge this defiant, idealistic, and problematic label. History influences aesthetics, and aesthetics represent an ideology.  What does it mean to be punk today?

To submit, please send a weblink of the work (Wetransfers not accepted), a short synopsis, and an artist bio to [email protected]. Digital (including digitized film) submissions only, maximum two submissions per artist.

Send your submission with the subject: WhatisPunk_LastName by Nov 1st 2019.
