Claire Strautmanis was born in Ontario, Canada, and moved to New York City as a child. At age three an allergic reaction rendered her completely deaf until her hearing was corrected through surgery at age six. She is the fourth born of six children, two of which have degrees from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and School of Visual Arts in New York City. She is the granddaughter of Edvins Strautmanis, an abstract expressionist painter and alumni of SAIC.
Claire Strautmanis is currently in the Fine Arts department of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, with a concentration in animation and a minor in Art History. In the summer of 2013 she was an artist in residence at Riesa efau Kunstverein in Dresden, Germany. She is also a 2014 alumni of the New York Studio Residency Program in DUMBO. She is a two-time recipient of Best In Show at the annual juried Exhibition [email protected], and has exhibited work at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Gamut Gallery, Denler Art Gallery, Happy Face Gallery, Concourse Gallery, Gallery 148, and the Q.arma Building, among others. Her animations have been screened at Square Lake Film Festival and Minianimate Film Festival.
During the academic year she works as a BFA and MFA student tutor as well as a BFA mentor at the MCAD Learning Center. During the summer she works as a teaching artist at the Children’s Musum of the Arts in Manhattan. After graduation in the Spring of 2015 Claire will be moving back to New York City to create a body of work for a solo exhibition in Brooklyn.
