Curiously clutching coats, people wander past the curtains and posters marking Sweet317’s entryway. A live recording of a cellist is playing in the background, as guests wander about, looking at art on the walls while sipping on a drink. When there is a dull roar to the crowd, the lights dim and the musicians settle into a circle in the middle of the 1,500 square foot room. Eric begins by encouraging guests to listen and engage with the show. “Enjoy the art and strangers around you.” Eric Carranza is an artist and music teacher based in the Lowertown district of Saint Paul . In creative endeavors, he has a rich and diverse pool of projects to juggle (batteryboy, Hot Date, Yeti Steady, etc.) much of which you can hear on local radio stations. He is also locally known for his community and art forward events, booking with various twin cities venues as well as the Saint Paul Art Crawl and many others. Providing regularly evolving shows has pumped blood into the community’s First Friday events. A recipient of the Knight Arts Challenge, his mission is to offer a platform for artists, compensation for musicians and provide free art/music shows to the public. Past events have featured music and visual art of various meduim and cultures. His crowds vary in age, ethnicity and social background. Drawing in a diverse art audience may be among the most valuable things Eric has done within his space, his community and his work. . His shows have the pulse of something at a tipping point and demonstrate that art can shake you and make you feel.
