access+ENGAGE Issue 26.1: Tour Through Shantytown
About the artist: Christian Nielsen is a Minneapolis-based artist whose paintings, according to writer Sean Smuda, "exist in the optical pleasure zone between literal and abstract expression. Their imperfectly repeating patterns and three-dimensional colors are familiar, yet alien. They subtly psychedelicize the windowpane geometries of Malevich and color interactions of Albers with an op-art emphasis on contrast." You can read Sean Smuda's elegant, sophisticated analysis of this artist's deceptive, simply gorgeous body of work, "Interzone: The Paintings of Christian Nielsen," and see a collection of more work by this painter on mnartists.org. |
