In this Issue: Art Out of Context
Artists and craftspeople have always been resourceful about finding ways to getting their pieces in front of potential patrons. Between cooperative galleries and artist collectives, direct-to-customer online sales hubs like eBay and Etsy, neighborhood coffeeshops and art fairs, or online networks like mnartists.org, you need not have curatorial or institutional support to put work before the public. It's in this spirit that a number of local artists are re-imagining the "gallery" in ways that incorporate ephemeral exhibition spaces into the mix, taking their artwork out of rarefied institutional settings to place it instead in everyday contexts—private living rooms, empty urban loft spaces (in abundant supply nowadays), someone's front yard. This month look for featured articles to explore this emerging DIY trend toward floating galleries and private exhibition spaces.
PLUS: A couple of reminders—Arts Advocacy Day is February 24 & this coming Saturday, February 7, is a special Free First Saturday at the Walker, filled with family-friendly events showcasing Minnesota artists

One for the Road |

Arts Advocacy Day 2009 is February 24
at the State Capitol
As lawmakers wrestle with huge deficits and budget shortfalls, arts advocates in the state are ramping up their lobbying efforts to ensure they don't make up the difference at the expense of artists and arts programs.

Minnesota Citizens for the Arts' website describes the purpose of the annual event as a chance to "talk about the arts, make new friends, and educate legislators about the importance of the arts to Minnesota. Each year, there are representatives from small rural choirs and suburban community theaters, presenters and big organizations, museums and art centers of all sizes, painters, tenors, dancers, cellists, french horn players, and arts administrators joining together to show the strength of Minnesota's arts community."
What: Arts Advocacy Day
Where: State Capitol Grounds and the Minnesota History Center, St. Paul, MN
When: February 24
