Lapidary is the art of working with semi-precious stones. In this course, you’ll learn how to cut, grind and polish stones into beautiful cabochons suitable for rings, pendants, belt buckles, inlays, and more. You’ll become familiar with the usage of modern lapidary diamond grinding equipment and also learn how to identify suitable stones to use in this art form, such as agates and jaspers. Find out what that ‘pretty rock’ is and how to turn it into beautiful art. Good jewelry design from the lapidary perspective will also be discussed. No previous lapidary experience required. NOTE: you must provide your own protective eyewear and a waterproof apron. All other materials are provided, although you are welcome to bring in your own stones.

Instructor: Justin Blum has a passion for rocks and minerals – a natural rockhound. He has put this passion to good use by getting degrees in geology but was distracted by making a living, working on engineering, ground water, and pollution issues for many years. Recently he has returned to his roots and enjoys teaching lapidary, jewelry making and jewelry repair.
