Art of This is privileged to present a new mixed-media installation by St. Paul-based artist Bruce Tapola. This installation, AU NATUREL, combines two distinctive bodies of work recently exhibited at Occasional Gallery in St. Paul. This union creates a novel investigation within the artists's painting and sculptural preactice to initiate a dialogue between the distinctive and eclectic artworks. This conversation begins with the dynamic created by the two dissimilar mediums and continues to the clash and fusion of abstract and figurative elements. This extends to his peculiar hybrids of quotidian construction materials, pop culture imagery and various painting styles and compositions that deconstruct and re-construct a plethora of compelling source material that is all but absent in the works' completed states. And most importantly, this dialogue continues to the works' viewers who are challenged to begin their own investigation of Tapola's idiosyncratic juxtapositions. Aware of his viewers' presence, Tapola's self-referential contexts and the conflicts between the works' playful humor and melancholy leave open myriad interpretations and perspectives through which the amalgam of work can be seen.
