Building batts by hand is a fun technique that does not require any
carding equipment, and is faster than you might think. Students will
explore different types of fibers (combed top, roving, locks, fabric,
yarn, etc.) to build up layers of thin sheets to form a batt. Each layer
becomes a miniature composition of color and texture, that can be
subtle or adventurous. Hand built batts can be spun into both
traditional and textured yarns. The possibilities are endless once you
understand the basics, and it is a terrific stash-buster! Students will
learn the technique and create their own batts to use on the wheel or
spindle. The instructor will demonstrate various spinning styles on the
wheel. Materials fee $5, payable to the instructor. Students must have
previous wheel or spindle spinning experience.
