Join us as video artist Peter Becker Nelson examines experiences from his Minnesota upbringing in moving works that touch on love, friendship and the complexity of human connection. We are especially excited to preview a new yet-to-be titled work, which features audio interviews with four men who were his childhood "best friends." The men recall and scrutinize experiences shared with Peter, revealing unique insights into the formative relationships of young men.
Dressed in costume and various states of facial hair, Peter creates caricatures of his friends as he reenacts their monologues. Through a lip-synching technique, Peter aims to reveal both his and his friends' perspectives simultaneously; at times, this is done with great empathy, at other times with biting humor.
Peter’s wife, Jane, joins him in the video Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, which explores his parents’ 35-year relationship. Wearing masks, they recreate the Nelsons’ gestures and body language as the elder couple discusses the struggles of their relationship. The result is a vulnerable and highly personal performance that touches many nerves. Both Peter’s current work and Mr. and Mrs. Nelson feature original scores that highlight the emotional experiences presented.
