Geared toward the beginning student, this workshop introduces the materials and techniques of oil painting. Working primarily from observation, you will gain a familiarity with handling materials, developing a composition, depicting form, and identifying and mixing color.
Shannon will guide you through a series of exercises and small-scale paintings based in the concepts of fundamental oil painting. Each exercise is designed to help you develop skill sets that can be continued in your home studio and built upon in future workshops.
Shannon Estlund holds a MFA in Visual Studies from Minneapolis College of Art and Design and a BFA from the University of Florida. Her work investigates the surrounding neighborhood and forest of her home, focusing on the growth, decay and various states in-between. Shannon renders these subjects using overlapping imagery, expressive color, repeating pattern, and abstracted form as a metaphor for a subjective and ever-changing perception of reality. Shannon has received several grants for her work from numerous organizations, including the Minnesota State Arts Board and Community Foundation. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, as well as featured in New American Paintings and Studio Visit magazines. Shannon lives and works in Fridley, MN.
